DD is that age. She is 16, on the cusp of getting her drivers' license. We live 11 miles from her school and her violin lessons. Therefore, it is in my interest for her to drive and have a vehicle so I no longer have to hire people to assist me in transporting kids for music lessons, early days for Chamber Ensemble, late days for Chamber Ensemble, Pit Band, etc etc etc.
Enter inexpensive beater transportation that I can pay in cash, that has the requisite AWD or 4WD our road requires in Maine winters, that I can carry liability only on for a teenaged driver. I researched the car's maintenance history, even calling the dealership that had done its work. It had a new engine, new struts, new brakes, new catalytic converter. It does have 132,000 so it is expected it would have some less than perfect features.
On the way home from buying the car, one front axle broke. My DD was driving it with her 24 yo brother. It devastated her that her first car was less than perfect on her first drive in it. So, the car went to the shop, and her friends nicknamed the car (keep in mind most of her friends are in music) "Shitty Shitty Bang Bang." Now every time I drive the car, like home from the shop this afternoon, all I can think of is "Shitty Shitty Bang Bang."
And so, I retaliated at DD. I got her a vanity tag for the car. (So adults can know for certain if it is her when they report her doing something stupid while driving) Since she plays violin, an instrument without frets, her tag is "NO FRETS". So, if you are in Down East Maine and see a little Subaru wagon with that tag on it pulling some stupid stunt, please feel free to contact me and let me know what she is up to! And smile as you think, "Shitty Shitty Bang Bang" !
